Imbolc & the New Moon

Imbolc & the New Moon

Merry Meet, my Magickal Ones. ✨

Legend has it that The Goddess gave birth to the Sun God at Yule. While the God is still a small boy, he begins to acknowledge his strength & power. Finally, as those cold winter days subside, The Goddess begins waking up & with her, so does our Mother Earth that is caged under the layers of snow & ice.

Traditionally celebrated on February 1st, Imbolc is a Pagan Holiday, featured in the Wheel of the Year. It marks the halfway point between Yule/Winter Solstice & Ostara/Spring Equinox.

There is no concrete answer for what Imbolc means. One of the versions says that Imbolc comes from Old Irish “mblec” which means "milk". Another version is "oimelc" which means sheep's milk in Gaelic.

Imbolc is dedicated to the rebirth of nature. Now, does it seem like we are celebrating it IN the Winter? Oh yeah! Most definitely. However, this symbolizes a breaking point – this is the peak where Winter is coming to an end.

Now, this does take kind of a weird position in the Wheel of the Year cycle. Imbolc is a period of both darkness & light. The energy of death is fading, & yet, the stillness & darkness remain. As I said, this is a time of rebirth. Life underground starts brewing, but we cannot see it yet.

It was customary to forecast the weather on Imbolc & search for signs of Spring.

Here’s one we can try!
If the sun looks out through the clouds before sunset on Imbolc, warm days will come in the near future. If the sun does not appear at all, there will still be severe frosts past February 11th.

Imbolc is a period of recovery for the Goddess, Brigid. It symbolizes the growth cycle of the Goddess when she is reborn as a Maiden. Brigid is connected to so many things: she is the Goddess and patroness of Fire, poetry, healing, vital, rebirth and creative powers.

Imbolc is a powerful day for magick and witchcraft. It is on this day when young witches were initiated into covens and the Path. Imbolc rituals are connected to cleansing, purification and letting go.

We also have an added surprise for us during this Sabbat! This comes to us in the form of a New Moon!

The New Moon in Aquarius marks the beginning of a new cycle. In the sign of Aquarius, things such as friendship, group activities, & social pursuits will be a strong focus. New beginnings regarding any or all of these matters are possible now.

This is a time during which we should solve problems that require thinking “outside of the box”. Look to the future with a brand new, positive, and hopeful vision. Brainstorm and socialize. Focus on extending a friendly hand, receiving support, and expressing platonic love for those around us. Give our emotions and passions a “break”, as we develop more objectivity and some detachment from past haunts. Learn how something (or someone) works. Revitalize ourselves through experiences that are new or simply different. Reach out to people in our social circle and in our community, and recognize the value of our friendships and social networks. Recognize that some level of detachment and distancing ourselves from our habits and attachment to the past will help us break away from destructive behaviors that are holding us back.

With this potent Aquarius energy, we have the chance to make progressive changes in our lives. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to these matters.

This New Moon aligns with Saturn, suggesting a somber and resolute determination to start fresh, and perhaps some reticence involved. With its square to Uranus, some unexpected or rebellious elements are likely.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 12 degrees and 20 minutes of Aquarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points with the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

As I said earlier, this new moon is the perfect time for a reset. So, during this lunar cycle, our intention is most potent. Now is the time to find moments of stillness & quiet to receive the intuition & wisdom that wants to flow through you. Now is the time to reflect on what has passed so you can move forward with greater clarity, direction, & purpose.

Grab your journal & pen, & get writing. Don’t hold back. Even if you don’t know what to write, just keep writing. Allow everything to pour out of you. You can go back & make sense of it afterward. This will help you clear out your mind & heart so you can properly write down your manifestations for the year ahead.

Questions to ask yourself as you prepare for your ritual:
What do I wish to let go of?
What is holding me back or no longer serving me?
Does anything need releasing?
What feels out of balance?
What’s on my mind right now?
How am I feeling?
What new experiences would I love to have?

Writing down your manifestations:
Whenever you manifest you have to make sure everything you are saying is in the present tense or past tense.

It’s important to avoid using negative, unintentional words when you journal.

Do not use any words that make you feel like you’re lacking or unhappy in life.
When you’re manifesting you have to believe that what you have is already yours.

So, instead of writing something like: “I would like to be out of debt”
Write out: “I live in complete abundance. I have enough money to pay all my bills and still be able to put some aside.”

When you say what you want in the present tense you’re able to manifest it much faster because you’re speaking as if you’re already living in the reality you want.

Invocation -
By the pale light of this dark moon,
I call to the ancients, the elders, the guides
& all guardian spirits to come closer.
Listen to me as I whisper my intentions softly to the wind,
speaking my dreams to a patient Universe that attends to my needs & desires.
I call to the East, where my ideas are born.
Hold the energy of creation for me tonight.
I call to the South, where fiery courage lends me the will to pursue my visions.
Hold the energy of boldness for me tonight.
I call to the West, where emotions surface & I feel my way into my future.
Hold the energy of movement for me tonight.
I call to the North, where I am grounded even as I imagine what might be.
Hold the energy of strength for me tonight.
And as I speak this, so it shall be.

What are your plans for this Sabbat?
What do you plan on doing to utilize the energy of this New Moon?
